One of the best not so secret things about living on the Pickerel River are the spectacular fall colours. Fall is a great time to take a vacation at Pine Grove. Most of the "tourists" have left for the season, children are back in school, and there is a calm that settles over the forest. Nights are cool enough to enjoy a fire, and days are often sunny with a beautiful array of colour reflected in blue water and juxtaposed against bright blue skies. It was a beautiful day for a paddle on the iconic Pickerel River. The water was as calm as glass as we paddled towards Toad Lake and up into Loon Creek. I love to follow the creek way back and portage over the beaver dams...so many chances for wildlife viewing and mother nature did not disappoint! Straight off we had many chances to watch tiny fish swim around in the shallow waters that lead into Loon Creek...we startled a large heron that flew up into the trees to get a safer view of the "intruders". Every once in a while something would bump our canoe, I wasn't sure what it was until a baby beaver popped up beside us, and proceeded to make a meal of the weeds. We hung out for a while watching the little guy as he hungrily munched away...not at all afraid of us or the canoe. Check out the photos from our afternoon paddle. |
