Please feel free to visit us on Pinterest at http://www.pinterest.com/pinegroveresort Lots of snow up here in the north country! My father & I went snowshoeing...or should I say we TRIED to go snowshoeing. Un-groomed trails with 2 foot+ deep powdery snow do not make it easy. It still was an enjoyable experience, being out in the bush...winter is so quiet. For the winter sport inclined you cant beat it! My fave part of the day is curling up with a good book in front of the fire at the Chalet. There seems to be an incredible amount of deer in our area this season, they are a daily sight on the roads and in the bush. We are also seeing wild turkey, they seem to be moving in and loving it. A winter wonderland surrounds us at Pine Grove. We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas & holiday celebration! At Pine Grove we are well underway planning our trade shows and events that Pine Grove will attend in 2014. Bill is working on the New Years letter that should arrive to everyone soon. We will also post it here, for those who may not be on our physical mailing list. One of the best not so secret things about living on the Pickerel River are the spectacular fall colours. Fall is a great time to take a vacation at Pine Grove. Most of the "tourists" have left for the season, children are back in school, and there is a calm that settles over the forest. Nights are cool enough to enjoy a fire, and days are often sunny with a beautiful array of colour reflected in blue water and juxtaposed against bright blue skies. No vacation is complete without the entire family. It is important to remember that there may be some packing considerations when you decide to travel with your pet. To make your dog more comfortable while at the cottage, it is a good idea to bring a collapsible crate and their dog bed. This way if they want to relax in someplace familiar they have their own space. We always suggest bringing “dog towels” with you. It may sound unnecessary however you never know if your dog is going to find a muddy or wet spot mid trip… it makes car clean ups and coming in from the lake a breeze. It is important to have your dogs vaccinations up to date, and ensure he or she is current on heartworm/flea prevention. You may be coming into contact with other dogs on the trip and want to ensure your dog is in tip top condition and safe from heartworm. Don’t forget poop and scoop bags, no one likes to step in a mess that is left behind! It is a good idea to bring an extra leash in case the one that you have happens to break. Also make sure that your dogs collar had ID tags in case you get separated It will make it easier to reunited you with your pet. Always know where the closest veterinary hospital is, in case of emergency. This info is not always easy to find in a panicked moment, so it is easiest to be prepared in advance. Dogs, like children. should be supervised at the cottage. In new surroundings they may be overcome with excitement and not realize there may be slippery rocky areas, or wildlife hazards such as skunk &porcupines. Any dog that comes in to contact with a porcupine should be immediately taken to the nearest veterinary hospital to have the quills removed. Keeping your canine friend leashed is the easiest way to ensure their safety in new surroundings. If your dog is obedient and under your control, by all means enjoy hiking the trails and playing fetch in the lake. At Pine Grove Resort, just off our farm hiking trail, we have an unfenced field called “Dog Patch” with a small agility course. It is a fun area for well behaved dogs to romp around and enjoy the outdoors. Your dog will be thrilled with a cottage vacation. It is hard not to smile when you see the sheer enjoyment as they bound through the trails, or fetch sticks thrown off the dock. Even the laziest dog is sure to revel in chilling on the dock beside its owner. At Pine Grove, we look forward to meeting your furry friends, both large and small. Don’t forget to visit us this June 8-9 in Toronto at Woofstock. A zany dog festival that takes over the St. Lawrence Market area of Toronto. Book soon, to ensure a pet friendly vacation this season! Bill Drawl of State College, Pennsylvania landed one heck of a catch while staying at your resort. It took 15 minutes of fighting just to get our first glimpse of it. Then nearly another 10 before we got it into the boat. As soon as we got it into the net, Bill's line broke. As soon as we got the net over the boat, the net gave way and it slid onto the floor. That's when I sprang into action! Pics are Bill with his 40", 18+ pound Northern Pike. Thanks for a great week, Bill, Carol, and Hilary! Rick Gates Camp Hill, Pennsylvania It was a beautiful day for a paddle on the iconic Pickerel River. The water was as calm as glass as we paddled towards Toad Lake and up into Loon Creek. I love to follow the creek way back and portage over the beaver dams...so many chances for wildlife viewing and mother nature did not disappoint! Straight off we had many chances to watch tiny fish swim around in the shallow waters that lead into Loon Creek...we startled a large heron that flew up into the trees to get a safer view of the "intruders". Every once in a while something would bump our canoe, I wasn't sure what it was until a baby beaver popped up beside us, and proceeded to make a meal of the weeds. We hung out for a while watching the little guy as he hungrily munched away...not at all afraid of us or the canoe. Check out the photos from our afternoon paddle. |
